Across an irregular rural site in Ojai, the Macdonald residence unfolds as a collection of gabled pavilions organized by the alignment of the existing landscape. An arched gateway roots the project in the region’s architectural history, marking entry into a place that feels both distinctly local and quietly timeless. Each volume is oriented toward sunrise, sunset, and long pastoral views, creating privacy while maintaining a continuous relationship with the landscape.
Offset pavilions, gardens, and passages bring order to the non-orthogonal site without forcing a rigid composition. The spaces between buildings become as important as the buildings themselves, allowing the estate to feel unified while remaining dispersed. The result is a quiet rural settlement shaped by light, agriculture, and Ojai’s enduring character.
