The Disappearing Pool Residence began with a familiar contradiction of coastal Los Angeles living: some of the region’s most desirable homes are often constrained by its smallest lots. Situated on a coveted Manhattan Beach Walkstreet property just steps from the Pacific, the project explores how architecture can create a sense of abundance without expanding its footprint.
Rather than dedicating the backyard to a single use, the residence is organized around a disappearing pool system that allows the landscape itself to transform. At the touch of a button, the water recedes below the terrace, converting the space from pool to patio and expanding the possibilities of daily life. The result is a home that embraces flexibility as a form of luxury, creating an outdoor environment equally suited for recreation, hospitality, and the rhythms of family life.
