Along a Manhattan Beach walkstreet, this residence breaks away from the convention of maximizing interior square footage and instead gives priority to outdoor recreation. A full sport court becomes the center of family life, supporting year-round play, entertainment, and gathering within the open coastal setting. A thin cantilevered overhang provides shade without diminishing the court’s flexibility, while monolithic vertical walls give weight and balance to the expansive horizontal space.
Large openings connect the interior to the court, allowing movement and activity to remain present throughout the home. The project finds meaning not in enclosure, but in the shared rituals of competition, celebration, and play. By sitting comfortably within its setbacks, the residence offers a more generous model of coastal living centered on activity.
