In Manhattan Beach, the rhythms of ascent and descent are so common they’ve become almost invisible - the perch at the top floor of each home is woven into the fabric of every neighborhood as much as the hills are woven into the ocean. This project embraces ubiquity and leans into the steps that are so essential to life in this community.
The architecture utilizes this stacked arrangement, each stratum inching closer to the southwest views. This stepping is both as practical (program size and openness necessarily increase as one ascends) as it is graphic (the terracing nature reaches the nostalgia of an aged urban landmark).
This project stands as a landmark—not just for the neighborhood, but for the generations of family who will continue to gather, grow, and share the ocean.
